STRUCTURE All Shakespearean sonnets have the same structure< they all have 14 lines divided into three quatrains and a rhyming couplets The rhyme scheme is ABAB / CDCD / EFEF / GG Each line makes use of iambic pentameter (unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable) THEME Also in this case, Shakespeare always used to talk about themes such as love, passion and pleasure. Here we can find images of nature and a sort of figurative language; the whole poem is an extended metaphor (comparing the beauty of the poet-s lover to the beauty of a summers day) MODERN TRANSLATION/EXPLENATION Should I compare you to a summer day you are more lovelier and more mild In May rough winds shake the delicate flower buds, And the duration of summer is always too short Sometimes the Sun, the eye of heaven, is too hot And his golden face is often dimmed; and the beauty falls away from beautiful people stripped by chance or natures changing course But your eternal summer will not fade, nor will you lose possession of the beauty you own, nor will death be able to boast that you wander in his shade, when you live in eternal lines, set apart from time. As long as men breathe or have eyes to see, as long as this sonnet lives, it will give life to you. SUMMARY The poet compares his beloved to a summers day, but this comparison is poor since the lover is far superior and their beauty is preserved for all time protected by the poem, which time cannot erase Summer has its disadvantages – the winds are too rough, clouds can block the sun, is too short and too hot. Peoples beauty does not last – they get old and wrinkly as time passes But your beauty wont fade because your memory will live in this poem ANALYSIS Like as the waves As the waves move toward the pebbled shore, so do the minutes we have to live hasten toward their end, each moment changing place with the one before, striving to move forward with successive efforts. Everything that has been born, though it once swam in that broad ocean of light that exists before birth, crawls its way up the shores of maturity, where it faces cruel obstacles to its glory. Time, which gives everything, now destroys its own gift. Time pierces the beauty of youth, drawing wrinkles in beautys forehead. Time devours the choicest specimens of nature; nothing exists that it wont mow down with scythe. And yet my verses will last into the future, praising your worth despite Times cruel hand STRUCTURE Divided in 4 stanzas ABAB/CDCD/EFEF/GG regular rhymes, as in all the sonnets In the first stanza he makes a comparison with the waves and the time In the second start talking about human life and the affect of time on it In the third one is confirmed that time is responsible of the down fall of life, and nothing can stand it At the end, theres the description of poetry as the only thing that can survive time The minutes of our lives tick slowly towards death, just as waves make towards the pebble shore The time destroys all the gift that initially gave Talks about the eternity of poetry, and how his verses will stand the test of time
