SHAKESPEARE’SONNETS Collection of 154 sonnets ¹ petrarchan’s sonnets 3 quatrains + 1 rhyming couplet - they were not chronological - they have no title - can be divided into 2 sections 1 addresses to a fair youth 2 addressed to a dark lady (=his young patron, the earl of southempton) (=physically unattractive but desiderab) à sonnets 1->18 à sonnets 19-> 126 àtheme of marriage as a way to preserve àtheme the destructive power his virtues and beauty of time and eternalizing power of artà art and immortality he’s still alive thanks to his art/works different from tradition à traditionally love poems praised woman’s beauty and worth BUT here addressed to a young man à here the sonnets devoted to a woman seems negative and non-conventional SHALL I COMPARE THEE (sonnet by shakespeare) The sonnet begins with a question: he wonders whether he can compare his patron (=the earl of southampton) to a summer day then he answers that he’s more lovely and balanced he justifies his answer: because summer is imperfect because sometimes - Summer is stormyà rough winds - Too short - Too hot - Often cloudy Every beautiful thing sometimes decades= becomes less beautiful because ruined by chance or by the changing course of nature He promises his patron that he will live forever and his beauty will not fade, à death will not boast that you will walk in his shade how?? Thanks to THIS sonnet Theme: THE ETERNALISING POWER OF ART MY MISTRESS EYES This sonnet belongs to the section addressed to the dark lady Here he talks about his lover in an unusual way usually: - Praise their worth and beauty with images of light - Compared to something innocent, to an angel to praise her special qualities (=being superior to every human being) o Her eyes are nothing like the sun o Normal lipsà not as red as coral o Breast not as white as snow o She has no roses cheeks o Her breath is less delight than perfumes o A beautiful voice, but music more pleasing à she is not a goddess, we have never seen one è He wants to say that his love is as unique as all the other women described with false comparisons LIKE AS THE WAVES The passage of time in man’s life is presented through metaphors He compares the assing of time to the ocean waves rushing quickly towards the shore: As the waves roll towards the shore, so our minutes hurry to their endà they both constantly move towards their end Nativity/birth, once it comes to light crawls to maturity, after being crowned insidious eclipses fight against her glory (maturity) and the time that gave life now destroys the giftà time takes what it gives time overwhelms the flower, put on youth and puts deep wrinkles on the forehead of beautyà Wrinkles will appear on the face followed by sickness. Finally death will come to reap its harvest with its scythe. However th poet’s verse will survive to praise the qualities of the man as he was in his youthà In this way art will defeat time In the couplet turning point
