HYDE, Robert Louis Stevenson The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a short horror story written by Robert Louis Stevenson. The story is set in London, around the nineteenth century The main characters are: - Mr. Utterson, a lawyer; - and his friend Dr. Jekyll, who sometimes trasform himself into Mr. Hyde, an evil man. One day Mr. Utterson and his friend, Mr. Enfield’s saw a door of a big house, during their usual walk. In front of that door Mr. Enfield tells Utterson that months ago, he saw a small, strange man, named Edward Hyde, crush a young girl. So he forced him to pay her family if he wanted to avoid a scandal, so Hyde led Enfield to that exactly door to gave him a cheque signed by a gentleman, Dr. Jekyll, an Utterson's friend. Already suspicious, Utterson worries when his friend Jekyll decides, in case he dies or if he disappears for more than three months, to give his heritage to this strange Mr. Hyde. One year later, also a woman sees Mr. Hyde kill a man, beating him with a cane. And he police find half of that cane in Hyde’s laboratory, but Hyde wasn’t there. After that Dr. Jekyll, that recently became very strange and solitary, starts leaving his house and meets his friends again, until Dr. Lanyon, a Jekyll and Utterson’s mutal friend, dies because of a shock caused by Jekyll. And before his death, he leaves Utterson a letter to be opened after Jekyll's death or disappearance. Few months later Mr. Poole, the butler of Dr. Jekyll, tells Utterson that Jekyll closed himself in his laboratory for weeks. So they toghether break into his laboratory, where they find Hyde's body, apparently dead, and a letter from Jekyll to Utterson, but he reads Lanyon's letter first and then Jekyll's: 1. Lanyon's letter tells the cause of his death from the shock of seeing Hyde trasforms himself into Jekyll. 2. Jekyll's letter explains he transformes himeself into Hyde, an evil man. At a first moment he can controlled the trasformations, but now he can’t so he have to be Hyde forever, and the only solution is to accept the sentence for his crimes or kill himself, to end his torment.
