GULLIVER’S TRAVELS Swift had begun working as early (age 50) when, invited by Scriblerus club to write a satire against same followers, he decided to parody travel literature. Although preserving the original structure of a travel story he used the work to attack institutions and men in general, parody was a favorite gun of club members. DATE AND SETTING→ Gulliver's Travels was printed in London in 1726. The novel has four settings, each linked to one of Lemuel Gulliver's four voyages. 1. When Gulliver's ship is wrecked during his first voyage, he reaches the land of Lilliput, a childhood fantasy world built for very small people, the tallest being only about six inches high. 2. On his second voyage, Gulliver lands on the land of Brobdingnag, where he finds himself surrounded by a race of giants, making him feel like a Lilliputian. 3. Gulliver's third voyage to the island of Laputa allows Swift to satirize the scientific community in Great Britain. 4. The fourth voyage to the land of the Houyhnhnms, a country governed by intellectual horses, gives Swift the opportunity to criticize humanity. These four settings provide Swift with the opportunity to discuss everything he feels is wrong with mankind in general and British society in particular. PLOT→ The novel consists of four books. - Book 1. Lamuel Gulliver, a surgical and captain of Several ships sails from Bristol on 4 May 1699; after six months his ship is wrecked somewhere in the South Pacific and he is cast upon the shore of Lilliput, where he falls asleep. The inhabitants of the land, the Lilliputians, by his huge body to the capital and house carry him to an unused temple. Gulliver gradually learns their language, their customs and institutions, and gains the favor of the king. Gulliver helps them in their war against the enemy island of Blefascu. After several amusing experiences, he manages to return to England. - Book 2. On 20th June 1702 Gulliver sails for India but found himself in Brobdingnag in Alaska. Here the natives are giants, and Gulliver becomes the king's pet and is carried around in a cage. The king enjoys talking with him about the system of government in England and Europe. One day Gulliver's cage is lifted up by a huge bird and dropped in the middle of the ocean. He is rescued by a ship and returns to England. - Book 3: Ten days after his return his ship is attracted by pirates who set him adrift on a small boat; he finds himself on the island of Laputa whose inhabitants are absent minded astronomers, philosophers and scientists. Gulliver visits their capital that is called Logado and its academy where absual experiments are carried out like the extracting some beans or transforming human excrement into food. The island drops Gulliver on Japan and he comes back to England (1706). - Book 4. on his next voyage five month later he is set ashore has the result of a mutiny in an island inhabited by “houyhnhnms” hoses endowed with reason and able to speak that rule over the “yahoos” (a specie of animals resembling human beings), he admires the superiority of the “houyhnhnms” and is ashamed of his similarity with them when the horses banish him, he came back to England.
