James Joyce – Ulysses – 1922 • novel • Joyce is aware of the complexity of his work – he puts enigmas so that it could be immortal - Virginia Woolf hated it - Faulkner – “you have to be faithful about Ulysses” • gives a precise description of Dublin • Takes place in Dublin on one single day – June 16 1904 = Blooms Day + when he met his wife • 3 main characters: - Stephen Dedalus – Telemachus: son of Ulysses and Penelope à Stephen main character of another work “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” à many things in common with the writer: leaves Dublin and goes to Paris + comes back to assist his dying mother + teaches in school - Leopold bloom – Ulysses: represents a hero that does a trip/travel but Leopold is a normal man, an anti-hero + he’s jewish à symbol of modern man. He’s an advertising agent and we follow him throughout the day. - Molly Bloom – Penelope: was very patience and faithful towards Ulysses, waits for him ≠ Molly is a lyrical singer and cheats on his husband Leopold with her manager. • Leopold and Molly used to have a daughter and a son that dies – something breaks between them • 1935 edition – illustrated by Matisse – it is said that he never read the novel – he draws about Homer’s Odyssey bc the title reminded him of that. • does not have a real plot – following the character through the day • stream of consciousness and interior monologue to extremes – records every single thought of the characters in a realistic way and by free association. • absence of dialogs + complete absence of punctuation (even tho he used ≠ narrative techniques) à reader witnesses the character’s inner life: thoughts, emotions and memories. Revolutionary bc of: • 18 episodes • every chapter has the name of one of the Odyssey’s characters • there is a precise location where it takes place every chapter • the hour of the day • each part is associated to a human body part - Dedalus – BRAIN à he’s very rational - Molly – FLESH à she’s physical, down to heart • Colour • Symbol • Art • Narrative Technique – complex structure (ex. Molly’s monologue) • Ulysses was first published in statements in the “Little Review” in Ney York in 1918 à censored for obscenity in America and England • published in Paris in 1922 Molly’s Monologue • last chapter – 18th episode • before we only knew Molly through Leopold’s stream of consciousness • differences Odyssey/Ulysses - Odyssey: importance given to man = heroes Ulysses: importance given to woman – Molly always has the last word à the book ends with the voice of a woman • we follow her stream of consciousness while she lies in bed • she expresses her thoughts, needs and desires à typical of a new “liberated” female figure • Molly is in contrast with the 2 male characters (especially Stephen) - Stephen – “intellectual”, tends to react in a rational way, rejects emotional experiences - Molly – importance of physical experiences in human beings • William James invents STREAM OF CONCIOUSNESS • Interior monologue is a narrative technique
