D.H.Lawrence:born in Eastwood(Nottingamshire)in 1885, became a teacher in Nottingham University College, when his brother died he became the centre of his mother's emotional life, she died in 1910, he continued teaching until 1912 and in the same year he fell in love with Frieda von Richthofen Weekley, they married in 1914, they spent the 1920s travelling throughout the world, he died in France of tubercolosis in 1930 he is a revolutionary force in English novel because of his view of life, his fight against the mechanical and artificial aspects of industrial civilisation and his penetrating analysis of relations between the sexes, he was deeply concerned with the emotionaal life and with the emotions created by alienation, he thinks that man is as a mixture of culture and biology(natural impulses), "Mind knowledge"(separation of human intellectual powers from flesh and blood)can lead the individual to act wrongly and to fall prey to degeneration - sexual impulse: the strongest one: only a relationship(based on sensual passion and sexuality)between men and women can save humanity from self-destruction - he considered women only an instrument for mankind's happiness PLOT: is an autobiographical novel and a meditation on the Oedipus complex- he used Freud's Oedipus complex to explore Paul's relationship with his mother because he cannot love either woman naerlyas much as he loves his mother. After her death,he's psychologically adrift, unable to resolve his Oedipus desire. At the beginning, Mrs Morel(wife of a coal miner) is waitig for the third child: Paul, the protagonist. The life with her husband is a failure and their children are strongly attached to their mother and Paul is her favourite one.Paul cannot have relationship with other women, he also rejects Miriam(first girlfirend). He starts an affair with Clara, who satisfied his sexual component but between they there isn't a concrete relationship and she also leaves him. After Mrs Morel's death he doesn’t know whether to try to reconcile himself to his mother or continue to live, but in the end he decided shaking off his past Paul's psychological develpoment doesn't take place in a social void: Paul's father is a miner and his mother belongs to a higher social class. Mrs Morel is educated and determined, she symbolises the young Paul hopes to achieve. The father's work leads him to domestic violence and children tend to approach the mother. Seasons and natural objects symbolise his awarenessof the negative power of the industrialisation and the chaotic frenzy of city life. Paul feels bound to his mother and he often loves and hates at the same time.Lawrence uses the opposite of the body and mind to expose the contradictory nature of desire - Narrated in third person but all the events are seen through Paul's eyes, the novel records the emotional process as experienced by Paul
