SPIDERGRAM ENGLISH Physical and moral paralysis INTRODUCTION The paralysis can be multiple: physical, due to external forces; moral, linked to religion, politics and culture; psychological or emotional. It’s a motif that represents a state of immobilization and inaction. Every author will see how each of them represents this and the causes that lead to it, differently. Usually, this theme is used to explain the themes such as the effects of societal norms (tradition, shame and fear) on the mind of people of even different social classes. With this literary device is possible to understand the complexities of human existence and show the fragilities of people. JOYCE: lower-middle class: EVELIN HILL This story is about a 19 y/o girl who lives in Dublin with her violent father and her brothers and sisters. She has a boyfriend with who she wants to go away from her life of sadness and abuse. During the story is noticeable how anxious and worried the girl is about this decision: one moment, Eveline feels happy to leave her hard life, yet at the next moment she worries about fulfilling promises to her dead mother. However, the moment Eveline has this opportunity, in the station at the North Wall, she paralysis is unable to do or say anything, like a helpless animal. Evenline is a simple girl, she is not part of the middle class, so the language used is really plain and simple, perfect to understand her mind and thoughts. After the threat of repeating her mother’s life spurs (epiphany), Evelin has made up her mind, to elope with her lover in Buenos Aires. Nonetheless, at the station, we see the beginning of Evelin’s paralysis: - First there is a mental paralysis: her previous declaration of intent seems to have never happened, this show her inability to take a decision. Her mental paralysis is showed with her thoughts described as confused and disconnected; - This mental paralysis turns into a physical paralysis: she is unable to move or talk, the only thing she can do is seeking guidance in the routine habit of prayer. Eveline’s story illustrates the pitfalls of holding onto the past when facing the future and it reflects the conflicting pull many women in early twentieth century dublin felt between a domestic life, rooted in the past, and the possibility of a new life abroad. WOOLF: middle-upper class MRS DALLOWAY "Mrs Dalloway" is a novel written by Virginia Woolf that takes place over the course of a single day in June 1923 in London. The story revolves around Clarissa Dalloway, an upper-class woman in her fifties, married to a Conservative member of parliament, as she prepares for the party she will host that same evening. The narrative explores the internal lives and thoughts of various characters while looking into their pasts, desires, and struggles. The characters' thoughts, memories, and interactions reveal the complexities of their inner lives and the connections between individuals, Clarissa reflects on her life choices, her marriage to Richard Dalloway, and her former lover Peter Walsh. Another central character is Septimus Warren Smith, a veteran of World War I who suffers from shell-shocked. As the day progresses, Clarissa prepares for her party, which brings together a diverse group of guests from different walks of life. The event serves as a meeting point for the characters' interactions and reflections.
