It was designed and built in France by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel and given to the USA as a gift to thank America for its support during the French Revolution. It was unveiled on June 28th of 1885 in New York The statue shows Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. She holds a torch in one hand and a tablet representing the law in the other. Her crown represents light with its spikes evoking sun rays extending out to the world. The date of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776, is inscribed in Roman numerals on the tablet. A broken chain sits at Libertas's feet. This great monument is made from pure copper. It is 46.05 m. high and together with the pedestal reaches 93 m. and weighs 204.000 kilograms. It was made in 350 pieces and assembled when it arrived to New York. It took 4 months to assemble it! The statue is an iconic symbol of freedom liberty, justice and the friendship of foreign nations. It is also called “Lady Liberty”. She is an icon, a national treasure, and one of the most recognizable figures in the world. Each year millions who cherish her ideals make the journey to experience her history and grandeur in person. Tourists can visit the inside of the statue. It is possible to go to the top of it, by elevator to the first floor and then by staircases inside the statue to reach the crown and enjoy a wonderful view of Manhattan. The Statue of Liberty is near the immigration centre on Ellis Island where the immigrants were assessed. This island is now a museum and a popular place for a day out, reminding New Yorkers of their origins. The Staten Island Ferry is one of the last remaining vestiges of an entire ferry system in New York City that transported people between Manhattan and its future boroughs long before any bridges were built. A 25-minute boat ride provides a majestic view of New York Harbour free of charge. Besides the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, tourists can se the skyscrapers and bridges of Lower Manhattan disappear as they depart and come into focus again as they return.
