PHILGRIM FATHERS The Pilgrim Fathers were a group of Puritans who fled England in 1620 to save themselves from religious persecution. Crossing the Atlantic aboard the Mayflower, they founded New Plymouth in New England, now Massachusetts. The Pilgrim Fathers are therefore considered the founders of the United States and are commemorated every year on Thanksgiving Day (November 24). NEW ENGLAND In 1643 the colonies of Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, New Haven and Connecticut merged, forming the New England Confederation NEW YORK New York is located at the mouth of the Hudson River on the Atlantic Ocean and comprises 5 boroughs. Manhattan, its beating heart, is considered one of the most important commercial, financial and cultural centers in the world. The most characteristic places in the metropolis are the skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building and the extensive Central Park area. The Broadway theater is illuminated by the neon lights of Times Square. LOS ANGELES Los Angeles is a large city in Southern California that is the center of the US television and film industry. On Hollywood Boulevard, the TCL Chinese Theater exhibits the hand and footprints of numerous stars, while the "Walk of Fame" boardwalk pays tribute to thousands of celebrities with street vendors offering maps to get to the homes of the stars. LAS VEGAS Las Vegas is a vacation destination for its nightlife. "The Strip" is the main street more than 4 miles long, this avenue is home to hotels with fountains to the rhythm of music and the replica of an Egyptian pyramid, the Grand Canal of Venice and the Eiffel Tower. ATLANTA Atlanta is the capital of the US state of Georgia. The huge Georgia Aquarium is part of the Centennial Olympic Park, built in downtown Atlanta for the 1996 Olympics. SILICON VALLEY Silicon Valley, which is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, in Southern California, is home to numerous start- ups and international companies specializing in technology. The most important are Apple, Facebook and Google. CAPITOL HILL Capitol Hill is the largest historic residential neighborhood in Washington. Inside is the seat of the United States Government which houses the Capitol, the Senate, the House of Representatives and the Supreme Court. GROUND ZERO Is the area of Manhattan, New York, where the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center once stood. THANKSGIVING DAY Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on November 24 and is a holiday of Christian origin observed in the United States of America, Canada, Panama, Grenada, Saint Lucia and Liberia as a sign of gratitude to God for the harvest and as much as received during the past year.
