Robinson Crusoe is a young English man who lives in the town of York in the first half of the XII century. His father wants him to become a lawyer, but his desire is to sail in the sea. Initially he obeys him, but then he embarks on a ship bound for London with a friend. His ship sinks into the sea, but he loves a lot the sea and for this reason, he embarks another time. Also this travel is unhappy: Robinson is caught by some pirates and he is enslaved to Sallee, in Africa. After two years, he escapes from the African coasts with Xury, an Arabic slave boy. A kindly Portuguese captain picks them up, buys Xury from Robinson and takes him to Brazil. Here Crusoe establishes himself as a plantation owner and soon becomes successful. After some years, he embarks on a slave-gathering expedition to West Africa but his ship sinks near the coast of Trinidad. He arrives on a desert island in the mouth of the river Orinoco in Venezuela (after he will name this island “The Island of the desperation”). He builds a shelter with some pieces of his ship, he erects a cross that he inscribes with the date of his arrival, September 1° 1659, and makes a notch every day in order never to lose track of time. He also keeps a journal of his household activities and he cultivates and raises some goats. In June 1660, he falls ill and hallucinates that an angel visits, warning him to repent. Crusoe experiences a religious illumination and realizes that God has delivered him from his earlier sins. The Bible becomes his inspiration and his safety. After some years, he discovers that on the island lives also a group of cannibals. He saves a future victim of the cannibals; he will name him Friday to commemorate the day when his life was saved. Friday becomes his loyal friend and his servant and Crusoe teaches him some English words and some elementary Christian concepts. Crusoe saves also Friday’s father and a Spanish sailor. Some days later an English ship arrives: this ship is full of rebels who want to abandon their captain. Robinson conquers the rebels, he litters them on the island and takes possession of the ship. The 19 December 1686 Crusoe, after 28 years, leaves the island with the Spanish captain, Friday and Friday’s father. The group gets to England the 11 June 1687. Here the protagonist discovers that he is very rich thanks to his plantations in Brazil. Then he sells the lands, he marries and becomes father of some children. He revisits his island and finally he retires himself to private life.
