EXPLORE – unit 1 THE NATURE OF TOURISM P. 10-11 DEFINITION OF VISITOR AND TOURIST UNWTO This acronym stands for The United Nations World Tourism Organization. Its aim is the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism worldwide. TOURISM refers to the temporary movement of people to destinations away from where they live or work, the activities they do and the services they use in these places. TOURISM can be classified as follows: 1- Domestic tourism is when the trip or holiday takes place within a person’s country of residence 2- International tourism is when the trip or holiday takes place in another country (estero= abroad). This is divided into: ● Outbound tourism is when a person travels out of their country of residence ● Inbound tourism is when a person enters a country which is not their country of residence MOTIVATION FOR TRAVELLING People travel for many reasons and the most common ones (reasons) are: 1- LEISURE. It refers to travelling for pleasure and enjoyment and includes recreational activities, sports or shopping, educational, cultural and religious trips, health and wellness and so on. 2- BUSINESS. It refers to travelling for work-related purposes and includes conferences, exhibitions, trade fairs and meetings. 3- VFR (VISITING FRIENDS AND RELATIVES). It refers to people travelling to their home country particularly during holiday and festival periods. THE WORLD TOURIST INDUSTRY TODAY p. 14 Tourism took off in the second half of the 20 th (twentieth) century and has continued to grow thanks to the following factors: ● Investments in tourism facilities and infrastructure (roads, airports, hotels…) ● TV, the internet and other media have stimulated people’s interest ● Travel has become easier and cheaper ● Competition in the market has increased ● Development of low-cost airlines ● People have more free time and disposable income (reddito disponibile) ● There is a trend to have more than one holiday a year THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF TOURISM P. 16 Tourism is one of the largest economic sectors that contributes to the economic growth through ● the creation of jobs and businesses ● the stimulation of capital investment ● the development of infrastructure It contributes to the Gross Domestic Product- GDP (Italian PIL) and is a vital source of foreign currency Its economic impact also includes the indirect effects on other sectors such as agriculture, real estate development (sviluppo del mercato immobiliare), food production and advertising EXAMPLE: COUPLE GOING ON A CRUISE
