It was mid-afternoon, a Saturday of bicycles, dog- walkers, and children. Stillman was sitting alone on a bench, staring out at nothing in particular, the little red notebook on his lap. There was light everywhere, an immense light that seemed to radiate outward from each thing the eye caught hold of, and overhead, in the branches of the trees, a breeze continued to blow, shaking the leaves with a passionate hissing, a rising and falling that breathed on as steadily as surf. In the translating process, I had to make some adjustments and changes form the ST to the TT. Here is a list of the translation techniques I used in order to achieve a fluent text in the TL: (a Saturday of) Dog-walkers = di gente a spasso col cane. This is an example of modulation, because I slightly changed the text by using different words but keeping the same meaning, and also an example of amplification because, of course, I also added more words in the TL than in the SL. It could also be regarded as a case of divergence, since “dog-walker” is considered as a single word in English. a Saturday of bicycles = un sabato fatto di biciclette. This is a case of diffusion, because I added the past participle “fatto”. Staring at nothing in particular = fissando il vuoto. This, on the contrary, is an example of condensation, since less words were used in the TL than in the SL. The little red notebook on his lap = il piccolo taccuino rosso sulle gambe. In this sentence we have an example of reordering, since the word order is different, and this is why the adjective “rosso” was put after the noun “taccuino”. The change from “lap” to “gambe” represents both a case of modulation and equivalence, since the literal translation wouldn’t sound natural in Italian. An immense light = una luce fortissima. This is another example of modulation, since I changed the adjective “immense” with “fortissima”. The two words are completely different, but I thought “una luce immense” wouldn’t be natural. That seemed to radiate outward from each thing […] = che sembrava irradiarsi da ogni cosa. Here we have another case of reduction, because I cut the adjective “outward” from the ST.
