(THE HERO COMES TO HEOROT)  SUMMARY Beowulf is the nephew of King Hygelac of the Geats; he is introduced like the greatest hero in the world. He lives in Denmark. He is in charge of killing the monster, Grendel, who frightens the Danes every night. He want to help King Hrothgar and defeat the monster. He travel across the sea with 14 warriors. In these lines he is described as a hero who is has a great strengths, is brave and loyal. The sea is also called as “the swan’s road”: this is a kenning very used in Anglo-Saxon poetry. The boat is like a warrior who can ride and dominate a wild sea and it is compared to a bird because it is speed like it. (THE PRIORESS)  SUMMARY The protagonist of the “General Prologue” to “The Canterbury Tales” in a prioress, one of the most important people in the society. Among pilgrims, there is also a nun, a member of the high clergy. The prioress is a charming and elegant lady, called Eglantyne. She has a broad forehead, perfect nose, blue-grey eyes and a small mouth. Her smile is simple and shy. This text is particularly ironic because it says that she only swears by “St Loy” the protector of goldsmiths but also because. She sings and speaks French very well and she doesn’t forgotten her aristocratic past. She is careful to table manners. Her tender heart makes her cry at the sight of dead or bleeding mice caught in a trap. In addition, she is so kind with her animals since she feeds them with milk and white bread. She wears expensive jewels, like a gold brooch with the motto “Amor Vincit Omnia” concerning divine love instead of worldly profane love. This aspect don’t really fit for a nun, so we can notice how rich and corrupted the Church is.
