TEXT ABOUT THE PROS AND CONS OF MULTICURALISM (PAG. 129 ES 19) What are the advantages and disadvantages of multiculturalism? First of all, the multiculturalism is a cultural diversity when two or more groups with distinctive cultures, beliefs and religions exist together in a society. It can bring benefits but also it can cause problems. Multiculturalism can have different pros, for example: you can learn different traditions and religions and you can have different points of view about a certain topic. You can learn the language and the beliefs of the other community and you can teach them the traditions and the culture of your homeland. Next, in the professional sector, a mix of cultural experiences helps in problem solving and can create a strong team. In addition: kids are educated about equality, which develops an attitude against racism. On the other hand, there are also cons. In a multicultural society, many people often are evaluated for negative aspects only and this causes conflicts in the populations as well as racism. People are judged unjustly for their different colour of the skin, for their religion and for their different and strange traditions. For the foreigners is very difficult to be accepted in a new society if they don’t know the language and it would take time to get accustomed to a new environment. In addition, a multicultural society can lose the typical cultures and traditions of the populations because the globalisation wants that all the people wear the same clothes, eat the same foods and behave the same. To summarise, I can say that a multicultural society is a good thing because different people, religions and cultures live together but it can cause problems like racism, conflicts and discrimination.
