THE AGE OF ANXIETY LITERARY BACKGROUND: The literature and the arts of the early 20th century marked by the birth of “MODERNISM”. Included and was influenced by different artistic movements: • Futurism decomposed the subject to create a sense of dynamism; • Cubism fragmented the subject into geometrical and abstract shapes; • Expressionism distorted forms and experimentation in the use of Colours to convey an idea of anxiety; • Surrealism gave importance to the world of unconscious. United in their attempt to rebel against the past and create new forms and styles in visual arts, literature and music. Common features: • Multi-layered and complex narration; • Time and place represented as subjective; • Use of experimental narrative techniques that aim to render the flux of thoughts; • Unorthodox forms of expression; • Use of free verse; • Use of complex vocabulary and concepts.
