THE APOSTATE Jack London The story started describing one day in Johnny's life, from general view of previous jobs and sicknesses, and finishing with Johnny getting sick again and deciding not to work anymore. The story start with the description of a working day in Johnny’s lif; in the morning Johnny is resistant to being woken, and is fed a meager breakfast and coffee which is really quite horrible, but that he believes is good. By the time he is on the way to work, he is accepting and is just one of the many faces in the crowd heading to work. To someone who wasn't involved in the factory work, and actually even to those in it, the workers were faceless - just another part of the machines. He worked since he was a kid, he changed different work and at the age of sixteen he was running more than two looms. He had to work to earn money to feed the family. One day Johnny got sick and he didn’t go to work for an entire week; things could not get worse than they were. In this week Johnny though a lot about his work and at the end he decided that he wouldn’t go to work anymore, but he was just going to rest for the rest of his life; he couldn't get any more tired and couldn't become any more efficient or a part of the machines. The morning he had to go to work he decided to leave the house and his family, in this way he would no longer have to provide for the maintenance of his family. So Shis brother would have to go to work, and his mother would have to stop depending on him. The story ended with him being as happy as it was possible to be coming from his circumstances. Johnny description: Johnny is a boy who has always had to work to provide for his family since he was born. This has characterized Johnny's character and behavior over the years. Johnny is grumpy, arrogant unlike his brother Will who is still full of life as he doesn’t work and goes to school. The work has changed Johnny, infact when he was younger he dreamed about his future and he also fell in love with a girl, then he stopped to dream and he accepted his life of a worker where nobody care about him and his life. Physically Johnny is a thin boy with thin arms and legs, and even being older he is as tall as his younger brother Will.
