What strikes his imagination most is beauty, and it is his disinterested love for it that differentiates him from the other Romantic writers and makes him the forerunner of Aestheticism. Keats drew much inspiration from the classical Greek world. To him the expression of beauty is the ideal of all art. Thus the Greek world lives again in his verse, re-created and re-interpreted with the eyes of a Romantic. His first awareness of beauty proceeds from the senses, from concrete physical sensations. All the senses are involved in this process. This ‘physical beauty’ is caught in all nature’s forms, in the colours it displays, in the sweetness of its perfumes, in the shape of a flower, in a woman. Beauty can also produce a much deeper experience of joy, as Keats affirmed in the opening line of Endymion, ‘A thing of beauty is a joy for ever’. This joy introduces a sort of ‘spiritual beauty’, that is the one of love, friendship, and poetry. Physical beauty is linked to life, enjoyment, decay and death, while spiritual beauty is related to eternity. Keats identifies beauty and truth as the only true types of knowledge. La contemplazione della bellezza è il tema centrale della poesia di Keats. Ciò che più colpisce la sua immaginazione è la bellezza, ed è il suo amore disinteressato per essa che lo differenzia dagli altri scrittori romantici e fa di lui il precursore dell'Estetismo. Keats trasse molta ispirazione dal mondo greco classico. Per lui l'espressione della bellezza è l'ideale di tutta l'arte. Così il mondo greco rivive nei suoi versi, ricreato e reinterpretato con gli occhi di un romantico. La sua prima consapevolezza della bellezza procede dai sensi, dalle sensazioni fisiche concrete. Tutti i sensi sono coinvolti in questo processo. Questa “bellezza fisica” è colta in tutte le forme della natura, nei colori che manifesta, nella dolcezza dei suoi profumi, nella forma di un fiore, in una donna. La bellezza può anche produrre un’esperienza di gioia molto più profonda, come afferma Keats nel verso di apertura di Endimione: “Una cosa bella è una gioia per sempre”. Questa gioia introduce una sorta di “bellezza spirituale”, cioè quella dell’amore, dell’amicizia e della poesia. La bellezza fisica è legata alla vita, al godimento, al decadimento e alla morte, mentre la bellezza spirituale è legata all’eternità. Keats identifica la bellezza e la verità come gli unici veri tipi di conoscenza.
