The civil rights movement 1950s-1960s: Civil rights movement marked change in American social, political, economic and civil life People of this movement wanted to end racial prejudice and to give black Americans equal treatment. Civil rights movement produced the Civil rights Act (1964) which outlawed [rende illegale] racial discimination in employment, schools, restaurants and many public spaces. After the Voting Act (1965) 400,000 blacks registered in the deep South. 1968: the number reached 1 million Martin Luther King: leader of the non-violent movement for civil rights (was given Nobel Peace Prize) 28 August 1963: 250,000 people of all races marched in Washington D.C. to protest against discrimination, after this Martin Luther King made his famous speech (from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial) when he said ‘l have a dream’ the crowd roared. 4 April 1968: he was assassinated in Memphis (Tennessee) Consequence of discrimination: many African Americans had lost consciousness of their own identity they thought that white peple were superior, this is why they tried to live up to their standars (es: lightening their skin and straightening their hair) Black Movement: help to change this attitude.+ In the sixties, black became proud of their roots and culture (slogan BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL) Other groups refused integration and wants separation from white people ES: Malcom X (leader of the Nation of Islam— separatist movement supporting the creation of a black nation in the US) was a black muslim whose parents had been murdered by the KKK. He pointed out the crimes committed by the whites against the blacks. (ne advocated the right to self-defense against injustice) He was assassinated in NY in 1965 ES 2: Stokely Carmichael he preached the need for ‘black power”, to be achieved [raggiunto] by whatever means necessary. Black Panther Party: new organization that was founded (1966) They represent the black Americans who wanted immediate action rather piuttosto] than just promises for the future, they should defend themselves and have their own armed police to protect them from whites. Poverty, discrimination and anger mixed togheter caused a wave of riots in the ghettos of many cities (es: Los Angeles, Detroit) — they were usually started by the brutality of the white police. Spring 1968: Martin Luther King was assassinated Several months later: Robert Kennedy (spokesman of disadvantages, opponent of the Vietnam War and brother of John Fitzgerald Kennedy) was assassinated too These 2 assassinations marked the end of an era of innocence and idealism The sixties and the Vietnam War During the sixties: were reflected new attidues of sex, fashion and politicis in film, books, music and art Hippie counterculture 2 important phenomena in the USA: — 1) protest movements, which inspired many young Americans to work for a better world \ 2) the search for individual fulfillment |compimento| through sexual liberation, drug-taking and personal gratification 2 ) many young Americans reject the values of their parents they formed an alternative hippie culture Hippies (middle class white college students): - had no interest in a good house and a well paid job «usually lived in rural ‘communes’ * chose alternative lifestyle, unconventional clothes, mystical religions and sexual freedom *_ listened to psychedelic rock music * used drugs (es: cannabis, LSD) to explore alternative states of consciousness * were against racism and wars * wanted to stop violence and make the world a better place * didn't trust politicians * often carried flowers (called flower children) slogan: MAKE LOVE NOT WAR San Francisco:American capital of the hippie movement Peter Seeger and Bob Dylan: singers that did an important role in the cultural revolution of the time thanks to their songs Most folker singers sang about political and social issues and a direct way that appealed strongly to young people. They personal convictions of peace, equality and social justice were reflected in their songs The protest movement * Civil rights movement: struggles to an end racial prejudice and to obtain [ottenere] the same rights for black and whites * The feministmovement: encouraged women to fight for their rights and in 1966 the National Organization for Women was founded. * American Indian Movement: set up in 1968 for the retum of their lands illegally by the govemment in the past The Vietnam War racism and student protest divided the American society as never before.
