The European Union After World War II, with the formation of the European Coal and Steel Community in 1951 the history of European Union starts. In 1957, with the Treaty Of Rome, European Economic Community was formed. The founding member states were; Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and The Netherlands. The single market became a reality in 1992, and in 1923, with the Treaty of Maastricht EU was established, the single currency came into force in 2002. Right now, the EU member states are 28, and the United Kingdom left with the Brexit referendum in 2016. EU Institutions Parliament, and the Council of European Union. Together they: @ approve, debate and pass EU laws proposed by the Commission @ Decide the EU budget ® has supervisory powers, paricularry on the Commission, to ensure that they work democratically ® Approvethe nomination of the members and the president of the commision Its the only EU institution where members are elected directly by the public every 5 years. There are 750 members from the 28 EU member states. They sit together as political groups. Legislative Brussels, Strasbourg, Brussels Luxembourg Formed by European European Parliament: Council od European Union is not composed of fixed members, each meeting is attended by the national minister of each EU member state, and it changes depending on the policy under discussion, for example, when the meeting is discussing the environment, the 28 national ministers of environment will attend. ® Sign agreements between EU and other countries @ Develop the EU”s foreign and defence policies. @ Coordinate abroad economic policies
