In this paper | decided to focus on the Italian territory and its relationship with nature. Italy is a boot-shaped peninsula that protrudes from southern Europe towards the Adriatic Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and other waters. The sea surrounds Italy and the mountains cross the interior, dividing it into regions. The Alps cut the top of the country and are streaked with glacial lakes. From the western end of the Alps, the Apennine mountains extend south along the entire peninsula. To the west of the Apennines there are wooded hills that host many of the historic Italian cities. In the south there are hot and dry coasts and fertile plains where olives, almonds and figs grow. For 22 centuries, the Italians and their ancestors have cleaned up the fields, grazed cattle and hunted wild animals. The forests that once covered large areas have disappeared. But the country's remote places and many national parks still have wild lands largely untouched by humans. The lower slopes of the Italian Alps are covered with forests. Above these woods there are meadows with wild flowers that bloom in spring. I decided to learn more about the territory of Piedmont, in the north-west and bordering on Switzerland and France. True to the meaning of its name (foot of the mountain), Piedmont is a land of mountains. It is surrounded on three sides by the Alps, with the highest peaks and the largest glaciers in Italy. Monviso, the Piedmont side of Monte Rosa and the other spectacular mountains of the region, create incredibly beautiful landscapes and ski resorts abound: Via Lattea and Sestriere welcome winter sports fans with their avant-garde facilities. The Alps form the backdrop to picturesque valleys, e.g. the Val di Susa, the Valsesia and the Val d'Ossola. The landscapes of the Langhe and Monferrato are rather hilly, but equally beautiful, a succession of cultivated hills and vineyards dotted with small towns and castles. Expanses of water and rice fields, long rows of poplars and ancient farmhouses make up the typical scenario of the plains around Novara and Vercelli. Lake Maggiore is the most sought after tourist resort, including Stresa and the Borromean Islands, as fascinating as they are with their ancient villas surrounded by beautiful lawns and gardens. Tourism in this area is very widespread, but unfortunately it is also the main industry causing the destruction of nature. Natural tourist attractions attract the largest number of tourists worldwide. The significant effort of all travel operators to encourage tourists to practice eco-friendly behavior is important. The natural existence of these tourist destinations depends on the locals who live there. So the participation of the local population in nature conservation and tourism profitability can help preserve nature.
