THE MODERN NOVEL THE ORIGINS OF THE ENGLISH NOVEL The origins of the english novel were bourgeois. the novelist was a mediator between the characters and the reader, relating events in chronological order and this linear structure remained unaltered until the second decade of the 20th century THE NEW ROLE OF THE NOVELIST The shift from the victorian to the modern novel was caused by a transformation of british society passed from the comfortable world of the victorians and Edwardians to the inter- war years, which were marked by ferment. The novelist had a new role, which consisted mediating between the solid values of the past and the confused present and highlighting the complexity of unconsciousness. The new realism influenced french and russian writers for example Proust, Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Two other factors contributed to the development of the modern novel: the new concept of time and the new theory of unconsciousness from the Freudian influence. EXPERIMENTING WITH NEW NARRATIVE TECHNIQUES The modern novelist rejected omniscient narration and the point of view shifted from the external world to the internal world of a character’s mind A DIFFERENT USE OF TIME Also the time was subjected and internal, there wasn’t a well-structured plot with chronological sequence of events THE STREAM-OF-CONSCIOUSNESS TECHNIQUE An example of a new narrative technique is the “stream of consciousness” a sort of continuous flow of thoughts and sensation that characterise the human mind, and the interior monologue is the verbal expression of this phenomenon. THREE GROUPS OF NOVELIST There are 3 different groups of novelists: -the first group consist of the psychological novelist, focused on the development of the character’s mind and human relationships
