Freedom and equality are at the basis of democracy. There are 2 types of democracy: - direct, in which the people vote on political initiatives through (attraverso) a direct decision (referendum); - indirect or representative, in which the power is in the hands of the representatives elected by the people. All modern democracies are based on written or unwritten Constitutions, and democracy based on: - sovereignty (sovranità) of people; - elections, to choose representative; - separation of powers, it can be a legislative, executive or judicial power; - governments are limited by the Constitution; - the majority has the power but the minority's rights are guaranteed. Sometimes the low voter turnout (bassa affluenza alle urne) can happen, and it consists in many people choosing not to vote. In addiction (inoltre), people can hold (ritenere) their representatives responsible if their actions violate human rights or are unfair (ingiuste). 3APARTHEID: political system in which people of different races are segregated and discriminated. DEMOCRACY: political concept and a form of government ruled by the people. >DISCRIMINATION: unjust treatment of people of a different race, class, religion and sexual orientation. > SEGREGATION: keeping people of different races separated from their people in life at work in school...
