In this poem a soldier is speaking about his death and he says his grave will be in another country and his dead body will enrich the soil because his dust is concealed. England and Death are the two main themes. England is personified: she is like a mother to him who gave him life, education and good values. In the text there are some images connected with England such as flowers, suns of home, ways to roam and rivers for the landscape and made aware, dreams happy and laughter for her inner growth and private feelings. This poem also emphasizes some traditional qualities of the English like gentleness, glory, sacrifice, patriotism and homeland. While the images referring to death are dust, body of Englands and eternal mind which suggest the idealistic vision of the world. Structurally the poem is a Petrarchan sonnet divided in one octave and one sestet, the rhyme scheme is ABAB CDCD EFG EFG. The tone of the poem is sentimental and romantic. In this poem the poet says he will be proud to die for England, where he spent a life full of joy and during the war only the body will suffer. Furthermore there are no references to the real war because this poem followed the romantic attitude, in fact we can find strong enthusiasm, patriotism and idealism.
