A quick introduction of the characters involved: Victor Frankenstein: protagonist and narrator of the main portion of the story. The monster : The ugly creation of Victor Frankenstein. Caroline Beaufort Frankenstein: Alphonse Frankenstein: Victor’s father. Elizabeth Lavenza: An orphan, four to five years younger than Victor. Victor’s cousin and then his wife. Henry Clerval: Victor’s boyhood friend. Robert Walton: The Arctic seafarer whose letters open and close the book. William Frankenstein: Victor’s youngest brother and the darling of the Frankenstein family. Justine Moritz: A young girl adopted into the Frankenstein household. Beaufort: A merchant and friend of Victor’s father Family of peasants Prof Waldman: Victor’s teacher at Ingolstadt, that inspired Victor’s interest in science. Plot Robert Walton, an explorer, describes his trip to the Arctic in letters to his sister, Margaret. One of Walton’s letters informs Margaret that his ship is surrounded by ice. Walton then describe a strange event:, Walton and his crew saw a gigantic man being pulled by a dogsled. The following day they discovered another, smaller man, desperately ill. Walton brought the man onto his ship. After a week the man was able to talk and told Walton an incredible story. The man’s name is Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist born in Geneva, Victor tells Walton that he attended the University of Ingolstadt .At the university he focused all his attention on experiments designed to create life. After months of study, Victor constructed a creature from parts of human cadavers .However, when the creature opened its eyes ,he ran from his laboratory and became very ill, for two years Victor believed that the Monster had died. , Victor learned that William, his seven year old brother, had been murdered. Justine Moritz, a young woman the Frankenstein family had adopted, had been accused of the crime. But Victor suspected that his creature wasn’t really dead, and was responsible for the horrible crime. However, Justine was hanged. He climbed into the mountains, where he encountered the monster. He told to Victor that he lived In the forest where he discovered a gentle peasant family living in a cottage. In his jacket , the monster found Victor’s journal and read of the experiments that led to his creation and he believed that Victor was responsible for his misery. So, the creature demanded that Victor construct another creature who would not find him repulsive. If Victor does as he asks, he will go away with the new creature and never bother Victor again. Victor says he agreed to the creature’s request. Victor began the work of creating a companion for the creature but then he destroyed his work before giving life to the new creation because he’s afraid the monster he created might act violently and damage society. For this reason that night the monster killed Victor’s best friend, Henry Clerval. Then, Victor married Elizabeth Lavenza. But the monster appeared on their wedding night and he killed Elizabeth. Alphonse Frankenstein ( Victor’s father) , shattered by Elizabeth's death, died a few months later. Victor wanted to destroy the monster. He chased for months, finally arriving in the Arctic where he met Walton and his expedition. Having finished his story, Victor Frankenstein dies on Walton’s ship. Walton ends the letters to his sister, telling her that the night Victor died, the creature entered Victor’s room and lamented his death. Walton concludes his final letter, telling Margaret that the creature was carried out to sea, where he disappeared into the darkness, after he burned Victor’s dead body. description of characters Victor Frankenstein is the protagonist.
