HYDE” The title of a SHORT GOTHIC NOVEL published in 1886 written by ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON: Was born in Edinburgh on the 13 of November 1850. He inherited tuberculosis from his mother, so he spent his childhood without any contact with the outside world. He was followed by a mentor and when he finished school, he began to study to become a design lighthouse engineer, like his father, but interrupted his studies to devote himself entirely to literature. Eventually, however, he decided to make his father happy and graduated in law. In 1876 he met his future wife. In 1888 he took a long cruise with his family, exploring the South Pacific Ocean and liked so much that In 1890 he decided to settle down in Samoa, that is located in French Polynesia, in an indigenous village called “Vailima”. He later died in 1894 due to a cerebral haemorrhage. MAIN CHARACTERS: (presented in the novel) - DR. JEKYLL: is well-respected, wealthy, and intelligent scientist - MR. HYDE: he is a devilish criminal and the embodiment of pure evil. He is Mr. Hyde’s alter ego - MR. UTTERSON: he is a lawyer and friend of Dr. Jekyll, he is a rational and curious gentleman - DR. LANYON: he is a doctor and close friend of Mr. Jekyll and Mr. Utterson THE PLOT: The story opens with Mr. Hyde trampling a little girl in the street and Mr. Utterson hearing this story from Mr. Hyde’s friend Dr. Jekyll. Later, Mr. Utterson meets Mr. Hyde and is shocked by him and he wonders why his respectable friend Dr. Jekyll could befriend with such an evil person. A year later, Sir Carew, a well-known, polite, and kind member of the Parliament, is murdered by Mr. Hyde. Mr. Jekyll is deeply affected by this fact and refuses speak to anybody. Not casually Mr. Hyde goes missing. Mr. Utterson, concerned about his friend Mr. Jekyll, speaks to Dr. Lanyon, but he refuses to talk and hands Mr. Utterson a letter that must only be opened at the disappearance or death of Dr. Jekyll. In the middle of the night Mr. Utterson is summoned to Dr. Jekyll’s house where, breaking down the laboratory door, he discovers a dead man. As Dr. Jekyll disappears, Mr. Utterson reads Dr. Lanyon’s letter where he admits the true nature of Dr. Jekyll’s experiments and Dr. Jekyll’s confession on the authentic identity of Mr. Hyde. In the end Mr. Utterson finds Mr. Hyde dead in Dr. Jekyll’s clothing. THEMES: (within the novel) - Good vs. Evil - Friendship - Reputation
