STEVENSON - The strange case of dr Jekyll and mr Hyde It has the theme of the "Doppelganger" or the "double personality". The novel highlights the problem of evil within man. The fact that a respectable public figure like Jekyll leads a double life, shake the values of the Victorian compromise. The novel presents a dramatic conflict: men have a good and an evil part; these two forces may be separated and left to fight each other, but this can led to the destruction of the original personality. Dr Jekyll, a highly-reputed scientist, who is obsessed with the idea that is evil tendencies can be separated from his good side, giving birth to two beings. He discovers a drug that cause this division, he drinks it and becomes a new person, an ugly man, who commits all sort of crimes, Mr.Hyde. Jekyll tries to rid himself of Hyde, but finds that has lost control of him. At the end of the novel the only way to eliminate hyde is to commit suicide, so Jekyll kills himself, explaining everything in a letter.
