At first performances took place in the nave of churches, then they moved outside. Latin was replaced with English. The Elizabethan age was characterised by many interests and vitality of language. Drama became the main form of Elizabethan art. Public performances were illegal in London, so theatres were built on the South Bank, that is over the Thames. Performances usually started at 2 o’clock and they finished in the afternoon. In winter theatres were closed because: ▪they had no heating ▪ An example of theatre is the Globe= it was the theatre of the company where Shakespeare acted (they were the company of Ciambellano). The globe was built at the end of 16th century (1598). In 1613 a curtain got fire and all the theatre were destroyed. In 1642 (credo) all the theatres were closed. In 1997 the theatre was rebuilt.
