Eliot life Thomas Stearns Eliot was Born in 1888 in Missouri and has study at Harvard College. since he was young he read many poets such as John Donne and Dante who dedicated an essay to celebrate him. In 1910 Eliot moved to Europe to study at the Sorbonne where he attended the lectures of Henri Bergson, a who said that there is no difference between past, present and future and began to read the works of French symbolists. During World War I he remained in London, where he published essays on philosophy. He marries a dancer ( Vivienne Haigh-Wood), despite her insanity. His first major work was "Prufrock and Other Observations". At the same time, Eliot had problems with mental instability and underwent treatment in Switzerland ( Lausanne) where poetry was his rift where he told of his unhappiness of family life. Here he completed the work "The Waste Land", collaborated with Ezra Pound. In 1927 he became a British citizen and converted to the Anglican Church. He also composed religious works such as "Ash Wednesday". In the years 1930-1940 Eliot concentrated on the problems of modern society. In 1948 he received the Nobel Prize and died in 1965. The Waste Land Waste Land is considered the central work of Modernism. It is a collection of impressions, personalities and emotions. All fragmented passages belong to a voice that refers to a multiple personality beyond the limits of space and time. All the fragmentary parts of the poem are connected by a main theme, namely the contrast between the fertility of a mythical past and spiritual sterility. Fragmentation represents the rupture of a social and historical order caused by war. There are allusions and quotations from different works such as the Bible. The mention is seen as a repetition of the same events and Eliot sees classicism as an ability to see the past as a concrete premise for the present. In fact "The Waste Land" the present and the past coexist. The style is fragmentary because of the different poetic styles used as the free verse that is used to reproduce the chaos of modern civilization. Eliot uses the technique of objective correlative, that is, an emotion is represented through objects or with particular scenes that arouse to the reader what the poet feels. So poets provoke this emotional reaction by finding combinations of images and objects to evoke that particular combination.
