During this period English started as a language without any type of international prestige. The language was enriched thanks to a lot of important writers such as Shakespeare and Marlowe and translators of the Bible. Before the coronation of Henry VII, during the XV century has been fought a war called War of the Roses, between the royal house of York (with a white rose as emblem) and the royal house of Lancaster (with a red rose as emblem). At the end of the war there was the death of Richard III of the house of York. The duke was crowned king Henry VII and he married Elizabeth of York, so he joined the two royal houses. The war was very hard for a lot of landowner because they were impoverished. Henry VII decided to exploit this opportunity and he consolidated and centralized his power. The court had a very particular and elegant taste, and they liked music, dance, poetry and theatre, but the king Henry VII decided to separate the two different parts of his kingdom. The first thing he had to maintain and control the nations, and the second one he had to maintain an atmosphere of tranquility and increased also the social contacts and relations. For this reason the king decided to listed the Prince of Macchiavelli that teach him how to gain the power and how to keep it, and he also decided to listen the courtier of Baldassarre di Castiglione that teach him how to keep his elegance and how to promote the immagine of the court. During this period London was also the first city in Europe with the most important population growth. During the XVI century there was also an important development for English letterature, in fact the printing made books less expensive and easier available for a lot of people. Literacy (alfabetizzazione) started to increase also because with the print there was a high distribution of books and a lot of people started to read. REFORM During the first years of the XVI century the only religion presented in England was the catholicism, and the chief of the church was the Pope in Rome. This reform in an important page of history for England, in fact after this period there was the idea that the head of the church was only Christ and not the Pope and the sacraments are abolished. Germany - 1517, Martin Luther decided to started a protest against the corruption of the catholic church and he started a Protestant movement. The reform in England was motivated by the king Henry VIII. For the king was also a very hard period because with his wife Catherine of Aragon they were not able to deliver a male child, who would become his successor. He wanted divorced from Catherine of Aragon and he wanted to married Anne Boleyn but the Pope did not want to gave him the divorce. Against the decision of the Pope he decide to married the young and beautiful Anne, for this decision he was excommunicated from the Catholic church. After this decision of the Pope, Henry VIII declared himself head supreme of the Church of England. The settlement of Protestantism in England, continue also after the death of Henry VIII with his successor, his son Edward VI (he was only 10 yrs old) and he ruled only for 6 years (1547-1553) because he died.
