Ulysses The Ulysses is a work of James Joyce that tells the story of a modern man, Leopold Bloom struggling with problems and daily vicissitudes. The novel consists of three books and eighteen episodes and each of this is modelled on a section of Homer’s Odyssey and covers an hour of Bloomsday. The parallel extends to the three main characters: Leopold Bloom is Ulysses, Stephen Dedalus is Telemachus and Leopold’s wife Molly is Penelope. Leopold as Ulysses travels and wanders with no destination, is thirsty for knowledge. The man is the search, a man in 'fieri' that tries to create its present and its future. Bloom also means rebirth, is the symbol of the world's knowledge and content. He is not like the usually hero, he is the modern hero. The modern hero is any man without any certainty, which lives in the arid contemporary and with brave looks ahead. At a time in which man feels alienated from everything the only two possibilities are or the resignation or fighting against adversity. He became the hero of a fight against nothing. The history don't change, the future is a big mark question. When all is is shrouded in fog, anyone survives, becomes a hero. Style:
