ULYSSES Ulysses is one of the best masterpiece of Modernism, it deals with one day description of 16th June 1904, the day of his declaration to his wife Nora. During the day three main characters wake up in Dublin; the main protagonist is Leopold Bloom, a 50 years man, Jewish man that leaves his house in the morning to have breakfast and returns home at 2am of the following day. Between 8am and 2am he has several meetings such as Stephen Dedalus, that is completely sad because his dream to create the perfect work of art will be destroyed and he was also kicked out of home by his roommate. Leopold and Stephen meet at a brothel (bordello) and Leopold brings Stephen out of there and getting home. At Leopold's home there is Molly, his wife, that is having fantasies about her meeting with the lover, her music director. The title is referred to the Homer's great poem Odyssey, the story of Ulysses and his voyages after Troy's war. Ulysses is published in 1922 (same year of Waste Land) and is divided into 3 chapters (Telemachiad dedicated to Dedalus; the Odyssey dedicated to Leopold; the Nostos dedicated to the return of Ulysses) and 18 episodes. This is the most important parallelism between the two works, but there are a lot of referring to discover in fact Joyce also challenges the critics in Finnegann's Wake, where critics will have lots of things to analyze. The three chapters referred also to the senses and to the narrative technique of subject- matter, so every chapter has a different narrative technique. SETTING: The setting is Dublin, place of action where all has been developped. Joyce wanted to compare the decadence of the modern world with the brilliant past, so Dublin becomes the universal city of normal people and bourgeois people (Mythical Method). Whereas in the ancient world Ulysses is considered as winning hero, Leopold is the modern man, such as an anti-hero, that cannot rely on gods (non può fare affidamento sugli dei) but he has to count only on himself. COMPARISON: In Odyssey there is Ulysses, whom boat is destroyed and he has to face up lots of adventures (ciclope, Circe etc.) and survives using his intellingence. There is Ulysses's son Telemachus, that has to share his house with the mother's contenders who deny him the rights of succession to the throne and he looks for some advices from King Nestore.
