ULYSSES Ulysses is the stereotype of a hero, he is intelligent, brave, curious, strong. ● It was published in 1922 in Paris because in England it was considered scandalous. ● SETTING IN TIME: it is set in a single day of June, Thursday 16th, 1904. ● SETTING IN PLACE: Dublin. It is a “journey” through the streets of the city. ● The protagonists are ordinary people who struggle to survive and to live in Dublin. He considered himself as a cosmopolitan because he didn’t want to live in the narrow-minded Dublin, which was seen as the centre of paralysis. ● There is a parallelism with Odyssey. It is used the mythical method: the use of Odyssey organizes the chaos of modern history. The main characters and events are arranged around the homeric novel. ● Ulysses is divided into 3 parts like Odyssey (18 books/chapters). Characters: - LEOPOLD BLOOM: Joyce’s common and ordinary man, he stands for the whole mankind. (Odisseo) - MOLLY BLOOM: Leopold’s wife: she represents sensuality, fecundity, she cheats on her husband. (Penelope) - STEPHEN DEDALUS: he represents every young man who is looking for maturity. (Telemaco) the character are all anti heroes (parody) ● COLLAGE TECHNIQUE: we can find a revolutionary prose made of stream of consciousness, the cinematic technique, dramatic dialogues, the juxtaposition of events, question and answers. ● The language expresses what is inside the mind of the character. ● INTERIOR MONOLOGUE: 2 levels of narration (neutral point of view and bloom’s point of view). In the last part of the book there is an EXTREME interior monologue of molly. ● Backwards and forwards in time. ● Absence of punctuation and introduction of people or events. Flowing of thoughts.
