ULYSSES Is a novel published in paris in 1922 by james joyce The title comes from the comparison that the author makes between the novel and the Odissey by Homero ^ The comparisons he makes are in the structure, characters and the concept of the voyage ^ The structure of the novel is : 18 episodes divided in three parts The concept of the voyage and the epic is related to the theory of joyce in which he wanted to write the “Epic of modern man” ^ The protagonist, Leopold Bloom, compared to Ulysses Is a normal modern man who wonders in the streets of Dublin and faces a moral journey inside his consciousness. This journey represents the “Man’s struggle against the suffferings of life” ^^^ - There are not single actions but a series of events that Bloom and the other characters live in the course of the day - All the experiences and emotions are perceived from different points of view at different times. This journey is based on INTROSPECTION, not Description ^ Like Dublin -> perceived by voices and smells This journey he faces takes place in 24 hours Specifically, during the 16th of July 1904 (joyce chooses this date to honor his first date with Nora Barnacle) Time is SUBJECTIVE, also called “Ever Present” ,because it is not the outside time, but the time of the consciousness
