Is designed as a detailed account of ordinary life on an ordinary Dublin day. The story is set on June 16 1904, the day that Joyce’s wife (Nora Barnacle) made her love clear to him. The story revolves around three characters: Leopold Bloom, an alienated man Stephen Daedalus and Molly, Bloom’s wife. Joyce sed the Odyssey as a structural framework for his book, arranging his characters and events around Homer’s heroic model. The theme of the novel is the moral: human life means suffering, failing but also struggling to rise and seek the good. The novelty of this novel is the technique, he used: the stream of consciousness technique, an attempt of reproducing what happens in our mind; the collage technique, and the direct interior monologue. Bloom's train of thought Bloom stands before the window of an optician, uncertain if he ought to drop into old Harris's and have a chat with young Sinclair. Considering that Sinclair is probably at his lunch he looks again at the shop window, thinking he must get his old glasses set right. They are good German lenses, he thinks; Germans are excellent traders; they are making their way everywhere they sell on easy terms to capture trade. Instead of buying a new pair of glasses, Bloom thinks that he might chance on a pair in the railway lost property office, where people leave behind an incredible number of things. As to his glasses, Bloom now wants to test them by looking at a little watch on the roof of the bank, but he can't stand the sunlight, even though he holds up his right hand at arm’ length towards the sun. He wishes he had his black glasses . With them and with field glasses he might even be able to see those sunspots ; people say they are the result of terrific explosions on the sun's surface; they even say there will be a total eclipse this year, probably in autumn.
