VIRGINIA WOLF Born in London, Virginia Wolf grew up in an intellectual environment and later took part in a group of intellectuals known as The Bloomsbury Group. In 1912 she married Leonard Wolf and together they founded a printing house known as Hogarth Press. She suffered from a period of depression for a good part of her life and attempted suicide. In 1941 she committed suicide by drowning. She was 59 years old. THE BLOOMSBURY GROUP Virginia Woolf and her brother began informal meetings with intellectual friends who often met at Virginia's home in Bloomsbury. Many of the members were famous people in cultural fields such as the writer E.M. Forster and the economist Keynes. MRS DALLOWAY The protagonist Clarissa Dalloway, wife of the Member of Parliament Richard Dalloway, spent the day preparing a party for the evening at her home in Westminster. She also invited Peter Walsh, with whom she fell in love as a young man and who was still in love with her. While the party was taking place, Septimius Warren Smith attempted suicide in an unattractive part of London. Clarissa heard the news at the party from the psychiatrist who had consulted Septimus. Clarissa was struck by the news for no reason. She was unfamiliar with Septimus' life and both had shared some events they witnessed on the same day. THEMES AND STYLES Through the character of Septimus, who was a participant in the horrors of the war, Woolf portrays the traumatic effects of war on the psyche. Woolf was interested in psychoanalysis, the unconscious and the functioning of the human mind. On a more personal level she is thrown out of the ghost of her mental instability and fear of "going crazy". The novel is set in the dynamic city of London. Much of Clarissa's detachment from her husband and sense of isolation come from sacrificing her love and inclinations in the name of respectability and social conformity. Thus the strong sense of connection that she feels with Septimus as soon as she learns of his suicide became more significant. This is an example of a moment of awareness also known as a moment of being. Similar to Joyce's epiphanies, they were rare moments of insight in the life of the characters. The author guides us among her characters physically and psychologically through a combination of third-person narrator and free indirect speech. We follow the stories of the various characters through frequent flashbacks and multiple free associations. The presence of the external narrator and the general respect for the main logical connections and grammar rules provide order and structure in a novel that remains highly innovative in both form and content. MIND/WOOLF’S USE OF TIME Her novels are mental journeys. They are based on the difference between the inner and outer life. She is interested in how the human mind works and the effects the outside world gives us. Time is another important element in her novels, it can be objective or subjective. Subjective time is the time of the mind. It travels into the present and into the future quickly and without limits. Objective time is
