She was the daughter of Victorian man Leslie Stephen, the founder of the Directory of national Biography. Virginia didn’t have the chance to go to university, so she received home education, she became an intellectual and a prolific writer herself. Her novels “Mrs. Dalloway” and “To the lighthouse”, she was influenced by Sigmund Freud and Bergson. She uses stream of consciousness in her works. Woolf had a serious nervous breakdown, after her mother death. When her father dead she moved to Bloomsbury, where she meet a group of intellectuals and artist. Mrs. Dalloway The story of takes one place (London), one single day (Wednesday of June). A middle-age woman Clarissa, she is busy to buying flowers for the party. We can follow her, and her action and we can try to capture the incoherent impressions that the modern city of London produce in her. The character opposite was Septimus Smith, veteran of war and while he walks through London, he decides to kill he-self. Clarissa know the news while she stays at party, but she accepts this because understands that death is part of life and decides to live on. Clarissa Female protagonist, middle-aged woman who is not a open-mind. The title Mrs. Represented her condition of mother. She live her being wife and a mother as a limitation to her freedom, but isn’t able to express her feeling. Clarissa mind is constantly pervaded by her past memories , to stream of consciousness. Both characters show their same fears but clarissa decides to live, but septimus decides the death. Time The concept of time is different to usually. We have subject time, time if mind, and object time, chronologic time. The passing time we have with symbol of Bing Ben. To the lighthouse The novel divided in three part: the windows, set during first war word. Mr. Mrs. Ramsay are spending their summer holidays with their eight children. James want to see in the lighthouse from the window, but his father tells him no. the second time passes, condenses ten years in very few pages, during these years Mrs. Ramsay dies, and the house is abandoned. The three section the family Ramsay return to the house on island. Mrs. Ramsay centre of novel To the lighthouse is centered around one single character Mrs. Ramsay. She represent the centre of the family, she embodies all the qualities, but she is also an affectionate wife and loving mother. Everything and everybody in the novel revolves around her. She represent the source of consolation and love for her children, she is sensitive wife. When she died her absence does not erase her from memory of her children. Modern novel The plot is very meagre and doesn’t represent the main source for author attention. To the lighthouse is narrative experimentation and psychological insight. The author adopts the techinique of the indirect interior monologue to reder the charaters’ thoughts visible and undersandebale. Time is represent in a very original and modernist way. The first time take place in one day, but is longer than the second which tell 10 years. Time subject and object. Contrast In the novel we can find a fundamental dichotomies, we have a contrast between male and female, life and death, light and darkness. In the novel we can find a massive presence of symbols, that represent a contribute to creating a sense of narrative unity in the novel. The lighthouse is main source, illuming presence, a source of constant inspiration and light, human desires, hope. To the light house, the preposition to suggest the idea not only the characters of the novel desire, but also the aim of the reader.
