WASTE LAND Unreal City, Under the brown fog of a winter dawn, A crowd flowed over London Bridge, so many, I had not thought death had undone so many. Sighs, short and infrequent, were exhaled, And each man fixed his eyes before his feet. Flowed up the hill and down King William Street, To where Saint Mary Woolnoth kept the hours With a dead sound on the final stroke of nine. There I saw one I knew, and stopped him, crying “Stetson! You who were with me in the ships at Mylae! —---------------------------- riga 12 That corpse you planted last year in your garden, Has it begun to sprout? Will it bloom this year? Or has the sudden frost disturbed its bed? Oh keep the Dog far hence, that’s friend to men, Or with his nails he’ll dig it up again! You! hypocrite lecteur!—mon semblable,—mon frère!” -Eliot describes a crowd which flows over London Bridge, the bridge that links the southern part of London to the City, the economical area of London. This is also the symbol materialism and consumerism -St Mary Woolnoth is an Anglican church in the City of London -Stetson, the New York lawyer, died on Sunday at the age of 74. Mr. Stetson was general counsel of the International Mercantile Marine, Messrs. He represents the ghosts of all those who have perished in naval battles. -WASTE LAND → The "wasteland" is a lifeless, sterile and deadly territory that knights must cross to get to the Grail, and the modern world, marked by the crisis and sterility of Western civilization, -Reference to the preface of Baudelaire's Flowers of Evil "Au lecteur" which describes the man sunk in stupidity, sin and devoted to evil -Riga 12 in poi → The corpse that Stetson buried will have to sprout and therefore allow the rebirth of man; the Dog, however, must be kept away as unearthing it would prevent its rebirth -Spiegazione ipocrita e finale → man prefers to stay with his conscience asleep, in that winter that keeps him warm, covered with 'forgetful snow', an objective correlative of the darkened conscience. And in fact the reader is a 'hypocrite', accomplice and brother of the poet, who has just defined April as the cruelest month, precisely because with spring it determines the awakening of nature (or conscience) giving impetus to the regeneration of life.
