Gender pay gap The inequality of treatment between women and men can be explained with many phenomena: - Firstly there is the factor of sectorial segregation: the gender pay gap is explained by the overrepresentation of women in specific and low paid sectors (such as the educational one), while the percentage of male workers in better paid sectors (such as in science, technology, engineering and math) is higher. - Secondly there is the factor of glass ceiling which is this invisible barrier that women meet when they try to reach higher position in some sectors/ —> an example of these two phenomena I have just talked about can be the fact that in this period of emergency Italy was one of the few countries with a task force composed by men only. - Ultimately there is the problem of maternity. In Italy, when female employees get pregnant, they are entitled to a period of 5 months of maternity leave: during this period of time women has the right to keep their jobs (as there is the prohibition of dismissal of pregnant workers during the period from the beginning of their pregnancy to the end of the maternity leave) and are paid with an allowance equal to the 80 percent of the average salary —> For this reasons employers tents to hire male workers and offer them more promotions, to avoid the problem of having a female worker in an important job position who at a certain time will may require a maternity leave.
