The First world war broke out when Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo in 1914 by a serbian student: Gavrilo Princip. Germany marched through Belgium(ha marciato attraverso il Belgio), a neutral territory, in order to attack France(per attaccare la Francia), so Britain declared war on Germany. ● What powers were involved in the war? During the first world war there was a triple intense and a triple alliance. The triple intense with France, Britain and Russia, the triple alliance with Germany,Austria and Italia. ● Why did Britain declare war on Germany? Britain declared war on Germany in August 1914; Britain justified war on Germany because Britain was a signatory of an agreement to respect Belgium’s neutrality. (Perché la Gran Bretagna ha firmato un accordo per rispettare la neutralità del Belgio). ● Why did Germany almost defeat the Allies in the first few weeks of war? Germany almost defeated the Allies in the first few weeks of war in 1914, since it had better equipment, better-trained soldiers and a clear plan of attack. (La Germania quasi sconfisse gli Alleati nelle prime settimane di guerra nel 1914, dal momento che avevano attrezzature migliori, soldati meglio addestrati e un chiaro piano di attacco). ● What was ‘shell shock’? ‘Shell shock’ was the term used by doctors to allude to the psychological disorders caused by shell explosions, death, chaos, terror among soldiers when the war ended. ● When did the United States join the war? The United States joined the war on 2nd April 1917. ● When did the war end? American participation accelerated the German defeat: on 11th November 1918, Alliance and German leaders signed an armistice. The peace treaty was signed at Versailles in 1919. ● What did President Wilson devise? President Wilson proposed ‘Fourteen Points’ to work out the peace treaty and prevent future occasions of war. He founded the ‘League of Nations’ where the nations would try to discuss and settle their differences instead of resorting to war but United States never joined the League of Nations. ● What were the effects of the war? The world was a monster that caused a lot of death, in fact during the first world war there were about 9 million of death.
