What is an essay? a) A short piece of writing on a particular theme or subject, often expressing personal views. b) A short literary composition on a particular theme or subject, usually in prose and generally informative or argumentative. It usually deals with a subject from a limited or personal point of view. An argumentative essay = the author wants to offer his personal point of view on a topic and he also tries to convince the reader of something. He wants to demonstrate the validity or falsity of a topic, supporting that argument with data. How can we organize an essay? The typical essay is divided into three main parts: 1) INTRODUCTION 2) BODY 3) CONCLUSION It is known as the “five-paragraph essay”, as a matter of fact the body includes three different paragraphs. An outline of a typical essay can follow this structure: Orientate the reader, Identify the focus or purpose of INTRODUCTION VOUFIEXt Outline a scope, 1 State your thesis Topic sentence 1 o ‘supporting details Coneluding sentence 1 2 The Essay Topic sentence 2 o ‘supporting details Writing skills Concluding sentence 2 3 Topic sentence 3 o Supporting details Concluding sentence 3 4 Restate thesis 0 ee ‘Summarise argument 5 POINT OF VIEW AND FOCUS In most essays you are expected to put forward an opinion or an issue, to agree or disagree with it, or to adopt a position. Your point of view must be supported by facts, evidence and reasons. You are expected to convince your reader that your position is justified. Such an essay requires careful thought, preparation, planning and writing. In a good, focused essay, you do not just give reasons in support of your point of view. You must also discuss the other side's reasons and then prove the weaknesses of such a way of thinking. It is important to consider other points of view, as this lets the reader know that all aspects of the issue have been contemplatedì. In this way, readers are more likely to accept the point of view expressed in the essay. An essay with focus There are two main ways of organizing a short focused essay. 1) Distinct analysis It is organized with this kind of outline: Introduction - Explanation of the issue - Thesis statement Paragraph 1 - Your first argument Paragraph 2 - Your second argument Paragraph 3 - Summary of the other side’s arguments and weakness of these arguments Conclusion - Summary of key concepts - Reiteration of thesis statement 2) Step-by-step analysis It is organized with this kind of outline: DESSTTÀ Mind- mapping and clustering Getting and developing ideas details STO CISA GCUnO Example of Mind- Mapping or clustering ESERCO È CESSCTET pren HOMEWORK: WRITE YOUR ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY “Online games are becoming more and more popular among young people and teenagers.
