Teaching Project The most challenging issue in teaching these days is the creation of a hybrid approach that will blend together the advantages of online and face-to-face learning. Both are important to create a community of inquiry that will result in active student engaged in deep learning, instead of passive superficial learners. I am convinced that the best way to describe my educational approach is by example, therefore, instead of stating theoretical and abstract principles, I will present the hypothesis of a course I am willing to give. Writing the City Overview The city has become, all over the world, one of the most significant entry-point to modernity. In the process of modernization the city played a fundamental role. For these reasons one can say that the city is a metaphor of modernity. In this course we will discuss how this urban discourse has been created, celebrated, contested and transformed, both theoretically and fictionally. After a theoretical introduction which will give a methodological framework for research and discussion, we will focus on different case studies which will be introduced by a lecturer and will be the object of research made by students. The cities that will be researched can vary according to staff/student interest, but in general it would be advisable to follow this pattern: two Western cities (to be selected from Paris, London, Berlin, New York etc.) which embodied a model of the modern imperialistic metropolis, two Western cities (Dublin, Montreal, Napoli, Athens) which can open up bridges between imperialistic and postcolonial realities, and on two plainly postcolonial cities (Johannesburg, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Cairo), that adopted and transformed the European model. An alternative could be three western and three non-western city. Lecture Plan The course is both theoretical and practical, challenging students to research, write and present their ideas. The class will be divided in six groups, one for each city. In the first eight week, apart from coming to lectures and class discussions, students will research the city assigned to their group, collaborating and writing a collective blog where the research process will be documented and discussed. Each week they will post material that the whole class can see and comment upon. In the first half I will also use the Moodle platform to distribute written material and organize online activities to engage students with the ideas that will be further discussed in class. The aim is to have, instead of a one-way explanation, a more active participation
